Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is triggered by retinal cell damage stimulated by the diabetic
milieu, including increased levels of intraocular free fatty acids. Free fatty acids may serve as
an initiator of inflammatory cytokine release from Müller cells, and the resulting cytokines are
