TPIAT requires a strong interaction between the patient and a multi-disciplinary team before and after surgery due to the potential lifelong impact on health and nutrition. The care provided before and after surgery, both for physical and mental health, can significantly impact the outcomes of the procedure, and thus TPIAT has the potential to improve with continued experience and better long-term care protocols. Although yet far from perfect in its current state, ongoing research will help overcome some of the persistent hurdles—including diabetes risk, gastrointestinal complications, and persistent abdominal pain (15). Until transformative treatments are developed to halt the progression and pain of chronic pancreatitis, TPIAT may be the only option available to restore a meaningful QoL for selected patients with severe, painful chronic pancreatitis.
